This is a mini review of Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. This novel stuck with me because I loved the characters and the descriptive writing of the author. I heard that this was a great book, but what ultimately made me decide to pick this one up was the upcoming adaptation. I watched the trailer on YouTube and thought that it looked like the movie was good so I got on Libby and (fortunately) it was available for me to borrow. I read this book in a day and I couldn’t put it down when I was reading it.
This book did a great job at balancing out the heavier topics with humor without it feeling overdone. One thing that I loved was all of the different characters that we got to meet in the story and how we got to learn more about them from multiple point of views in the book. Each character was seen by others in a little bit of a different way and it was fun to see how their stories were connected. There’s a toss up between my two favorite characters in the story: Tova and Marcellus. I loved how Tova was a mix of sweet and sass and Marcellus’s observations made me laugh and I enjoyed all of his chapters immensely.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the movie The Art of Racing in the Rain or those who liked the novel The Wish by Nicholas Sparks.
I am so excited for the upcoming adaptation and I think Sally Field is the perfect person to play Tova! I am intrigued to see how Lewis Pullman embodies Cameron since I absolutely loved his role in Lessons in Chemistry.
